Resources and Support for People of Color

Finding a provider, support group, or community space where you feel safe and supported is extremely important to your mental health and wellbeing. Click on the headings below to find resources and behavioral health providers who tailor their services and supports to people of color. The resources and groups listed on this page are open to all people of color and are not tailored to a specific racial, ethnic, or cultural identity group.

Estoy Aqui LLC provides suicide prevention training and social justice education to organizations and institutions serving the Latino/x and Black communities.

Dorchester Mattapan Roxbury (DMR) Support and Advocacy Network, NAMI Boston is a resource for those facing the challenges of mental illness and provides free support group and education. They are currently offering their monthly meetings virtually.

Louis B. Brown Peace Institute is a center healing, teaching, and learning for families and communities impacted by murder, trauma, grief, and loss.

The Wellness Collaborative is a nonprofit that works toward eliminating health care disparities. They provide education, insight, and best practices that promote sustainable personal and community health, wellness, and resilience.

The Social Impact Center at Roxbury Presbyterian Church offers educational and economic development programs to strengthen the Roxbury community. They also offer support groups and community conversations on trauma and healing. The Social Impact Center’s programs are secular and open to all regardless of religious affiliation.

PureSpark uses social media and their web interface to provide resources and daily coping mechanisms that would otherwise be out of reach for someone who is unfamiliar with the mental wellness system. While open to providing information for everyone, the organization’s focus is on Black women. They are also working on building a wellness provider directory for a wide range of disciplines from individual psychotherapy to reiki, yoga, and meditation.

What’s On Your Mind (WOYM) Inc. is an organization dedicated to combating the stigma of mental illness in communities of color by engaging in conversation around thoughts, emotions, and feelings. They offer workshops, a podcast, a list of resources to help you find support, and community outreach events.

NAMI Family Support Groups are free groups for family members, friends, and other caregivers of people diagnosed with mental health conditions. They offer a monthly Spanish Language Family Support Group.

Parent/Professional Advocacy League (PPAL) offers virtual Parent and Caregiver Support Groups to provide an opportunity for parents and other family members to join others parenting children with emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. PPAL support groups are facilitated by someone who has raised or is still raising a child with emotional, behavioral or mental health needs. All groups meet on Zoom and are offered in multiple languages. Additional options are listed in this document.

The Steve Fund is a national organization focused on supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of young people of color. They work with colleges, universities, non-profits, researchers, mental health experts, families, and young people to promote programs and strategies that build understanding and assistance for the mental and emotional health of the nation’s young people of color.

Mental Health America’s BIPOC Mental Health Hub includes information, statistics, and fact sheets about mental health for BIPOC communities.

The Medicare & You Handbook, which contains detailed descriptions of the program, is now available for the first time in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. It also continues to be available in Spanish. Paper copies can be requested by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

Couched in Color with Dr. Alfiee is a weekly BIPOC mental health podcast hosted by Dr. Alfiee M. Breland-Noble (Dr. Alfiee) that encourages dialogue on the mental health needs of youth and young adults of color.

Brown Girl Therapy is a mental health and wellness community for all children of immigrants to explore their bicultural identities and discuss taboo topics as they pertain to their mental health and wellness. You can follow Brown Girl Therapy on Instagram @browngirltherapy or sign up to receive their newsletter for information on virtual meetups, workshops, and resources on mental health.

Liberate is a meditation app for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) communities.

Ayana Therapy is an Instagram page (@ayana_therapy) with helpful resources for minority mental health.

MindRight provides culturally-responsive daily coaching over text message for youth and young adults.

Rest for Resistance is a web zine and support group that centers mental health, healing, and self-care for marginalized people, and especially queer and trans people of color.

Exhale is an emotional well-being app designed for Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color (BIWOC). The app was curated by BIWOC so that in your emotional well-being journey, you can lean-in and trust that this space has been cultivated specifically for you.

Leela Yoga + Wellness is a Boston-based organization that provides yoga, meditation, and self-care workshops and classes specializing specifically in a Trauma Informed and Trauma Sensitive approach. These events are available to individuals, businesses, schools, community centers, youth/after-school programs, shelters, and organizations. You can find more information and a class schedule on their website.

Linda Wellness Warrior is a wellness coach and yoga teacher based in Boston. She is currently offering classes online via Zoom and outdoors in parks in Boston.

My Therapy Cards is a card deck created by a Black female psychologist for other women of color with the intention of helping other women of color grow in the areas of emotional and mental health.

Innopsych is a directory of therapists of color who are dedicated to eradicating the negative stigma around therapy and opening doors for people of color to get the support they need to cope with life’s challenges.

Zencare is a provider directory that includes listings for the Boston area and is sortable by provider identity.

Inclusive Therapists is a directory of culturally responsive and social justice-oriented therapists.

QTPoC Mental Health Practitioner Directory lists mental health practitioners across the country for queer and trans people of color, provided by the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network. They also offer an online QTIBIPoC Healing Space and Instagram page (@qtpocmentalhealth).

Therapy for Queer People of Color is a directory of inclusive mental health care services for queer and trans folks of color.

Psychology Today is a provider directory for locating individual behavioral health practitioners. While the site is not tailored specifically to communities of color, the listings can be sorted by “ethnicity served,” which may help to locate providers who identify themselves as culturally responsive to specific ethnic or racial groups.

Therapy in Color was created to ensure all individuals had access to mental health therapy by someone who promotes authenticity and cultural diversity. The site includes a provider directory and blog.

Therapy Matcher provides free, personalized, and confidential referrals to licensed social workers across Massachusetts—including those providing culturally responsive behavioral health care.

Inclusive Therapists offers workshops and courses for social justice-oriented mental health and wellness professionals (CEUs available).

QTPoC Practitioner Resources provides resources to support queer and trans people of color in their own practices and in support of healing for the broader QTPoC community.
